You’ve got questions. We’ve got answers (and if you don’t find what you’re looking for here, feel free to email us your questions):
What does the day look like on an X Wine Train excursion?
This is an all-day trip from Los Angeles’s Union Station to the Santa Barbara Wine Country. From the time we depart until the time the train pulls back into downtown LA, it’s about a 12-13 hour day. Remember, each trip is different from the one before it as we partner with different wineries and change the itinerary to keep things interesting.
Where do I park at Los Angeles Union Station?
For parking information go to www.unionstationla.com to choose your preferred parking lot. There are more than one parking lot so it is up to you to select the location and price point of your choice.
What are the arrival and departure times?
We ask that you arrive in the main lobby of Union Station at 800 N. Alameda Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012 by 8:15am and meet up with your XWRR Tour Guides, Elizabeth and Kurt Borsting. They will be holding X Wine Railroad signs and shortly before departure will lead you to your business class car in a group after meeting with Amtrak’s Group Tours attendant. It is imperative that you be on time so that the group can be seated together. Just like an airplane the train cannot wait for stragglers. If for any reason you miss your group, you are in a Business Class train car on The Pacific Surfliner #763. The train departs at 9:11am sharp. At the end of the day, for departure from Los Olivos, we ask that you are at our designated meeting place by 5:20pm as the shuttle will depart for the Santa Barbara train station at 5:30pm. The Pacific Surfliner will depart for Los Angeles at 7:02pm. We cannot hold the train or shuttle for latecomers.
What’s the experience like on board?
We have reserved seating on a Business Class car to take us to and from Santa Barbara. Included are snacks and a beverage with electrical outlets to charge phones.
What if I miss the train?
Unfortunately, the Pacific Surfliner must keep moving and we cannot hold the train at either end for any late comers. We advise arriving at Union Station by 8:15am allowing for time to park, finding your Tour Guides, check in and boarding. We will depart Los Olivos at 5:30pm, so be sure you are at our designated meeting place at least 10 minutes prior.
What’s for lunch?
After purchasing your ticket, we’ll provide you with a menu. Our vineyard-style lunch, provided by a local Wine Country purveyor, includes an artisan sandwich, side salad, cookie and bottle of water.
Is there a dress code?
This is a casual outing where you’ll walk among the vineyards and stroll the streets of Los Olivos. We recommend nice, but casual clothing and definitely comfortable shoes – flat, sturdy shoes are best. Also, don’t forget the sunscreen, sunglasses and maybe a hat or umbrella if we have a rainy day.
What if I want to purchase additional wine?
We encourage you to do just that. Purchasing a bottle of wine and reopening it at a later date can instantly transport you back to the vineyard. Because we partner with mostly small, family-owned wineries you are helping to support them as well. We do not get a commission for any wines sold or any wine club memberships.
What are the rules regarding COVID-19?
For starters, if you are feeling ill or have a fever we ask that you stay home. Face coverings are required on board the train, in the shuttles and at the winery – they can, of course, be removed when tasting and eating.
What can we expect in Los Olivos?
That’s your time to explore on your own. Enjoy a self-guided Wine Walk or explore the individual boutiques and shops. Some tasting rooms require advanced reservations, which you may want to make a few days prior to your X Wine Railroad excursion.
Are Children or Pets Welcome?
Everyone attending must be 21 or older – except pets. While we love our four-legged friends, unfortunately we’re unable to accommodate them.
Is this a Party Train?
Absolutely not. But that doesn’t mean you won’t have a good time. This trip is for those who enjoy experiences, meeting new people, pushing their palate with new food and wines. If you’re looking for a “party” experience, this might not be the trip for you.
What’s included on each trip?
Just about everything: Round-trip transportation, snacks en route, shuttles to the wineries and Los Olivos, a vineyard-style lunch and tastings arranged by X Wine Railroad at our featured wineries.
What’s not included?
Parking at L.A.’s Union Station is not included and is $8 per day (price subject to change) and additional wine and food purchases not covered in the itinerary.
Is smoking prohibited?
Due to state regulations, smoking is not permitted in either train depot, on board the train, on our private shuttles or at the wineries.
How often does X Wine Railroad operate?
We offer turnkey tasting experiences a few times a month and partner with different wineries. Check our calendar for a complete list of dates.
What is the refund policy?
Because we have to plan in advance with our many partners, our trips will take place rain or shine. For that reason, we cannot offer a refund once you have purchased your ticket.
